MANILA – Court of Appeals (CA) associate justice Amy Lazaro-Javier has been appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the newest associate justice of the Supreme Court.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo confirmed the appointment of Javier as the replacement to former Supreme Court Associate Justice Noel Tijam, who retired in January.
“We are confident that Associate Justice Javier, as a new guardian of the rule of law, would display a high degree of competence, integrity and independence during her stint at the Supreme Court,” Panelo said in a statement.
Javier finished her Bachelor of Education degree as magna cum laude at the Philippine Normal University and earned her law degree at the University of Santo Tomas College of Law.
Before being appointed as CA’s associate justice in 2007, Javier served as trial attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General in 1983 and became Assistant Solicitor-General in 1994.
Javier was the seventh SC associate justice to be appointed by Duterte after Tijam, Andres Reyes Jr., Alexander Gesmundo, Jose Reyes Jr., Samuel Martirez and Ramon Paul Hernando.
Martires, however, did not last long at the high court as he was appointed by Duterte to the Office of Ombudsman last year. With the appointment of Javier, there will still be one vacant post in the SC./PN
