MANILA – Motorcycle ride-hailing service Angkas offered discounts to its customers Wednesday despite a Supreme Court ruling that would effectively allow authorities to apprehend its riders.

Angkas announced a P99-discount that can be availed by passengers twice with the promo code “AngkasTRO” after the SC issued a TRO against a Mandaluyong court order that barred such arrests.

“It’s better to give than to receive! Kung may TRO kami, kayo din meron,” the service announced on its Twitter page Wednesday.

“We are saddened to hear that the Supreme Court issued a TRO on an earlier court decision allowing Angkas to operate,” David Medrana, head of Angkas operations, said in a statement.

“This comes at a time when hundreds of thousands of commuters need the Angkas service to beat the worsening holiday traffic,” he added.

The LTFRB suspended the operations of Angkas in November 2017 after finding out that it did not have a business permit.

It also said it disapproved the use of motorcycles in ride-sharing services due to safety concerns.

Angkas resumed its operations in September this year after a Mandaluyong court granted its plea for a preliminary injunction against a shutdown.

Over 25,000 bikers of Angkas are at risk of losing their livelihood over the Supreme Court’s temporary restraining order, Medrana said.

Angkas however expressed hopes that the Supreme Court would soon rule in its favor.

“We will continue our fight to serve commuters in a safe and efficient manner, as well as legitimizing our riders. We are hopeful that the Supreme Court will eventually rule in favor of the Filipino riding public,” Medrana said. (With ABS-CBN News/PN)
