MANILA – The current Anti-Hazing Law is “not enough,” according to Sen. Gregorio Honasan II, following the death of an 18-year-old male student of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
Guillo Cesar Servando, a Hotel and Restaurant Management student, died in a fraternity hazing on Saturday.
His three other companions survived the initiation but were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Honasan said the country needs a new law that will regulate hazing or initiation rites of fraternities and other groups.
“This culture of violence must stop now,” agreed Sen. Bam Aquino.
He urged law enforcers to bring to justice Servando’s killers.
Hazing, the newbie senator added, is not the only way fraternal organizations can foster brotherhood.
“We strongly denounce the use of inhumane means because it has no space in a civilized and modern society,” Aquino added.
For his part, Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara said he “never believed violence made perpetrator or victim more of a man. True brotherhood means more.”
Senate minority leader Juan Ponce Enrile said universities and colleges should implement a registration process among fraternities and sororities to prevent deaths and severe injuries from hazing.
A school authority should also be present whenever an organization conducts an initiation, added Enrile./PN
