ANTIQUE – The Antique Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) urged the local government units (LGUs) to build campsites for animals in preparation for the upcoming La Niña phenomenon possibly from June to August this year.
Dr. Marco Rafael Ardamil, chief of the ProVet Public Health Division, requested LGUs to prepare shelter, food and other necessities for animals such as cows, carabaos and goats for the upcoming rainy season that could cause flood.
Whenever there is heavy rainfall and flashflood, there is also damage on the livestock for they get drowned, added Ardamil.
Typhoon “Odette” in December 2021 left P1.7 million worth of damage in Antique after 321 livestock and 3,353 poultry were killed mostly due to drowning, data from ProVet showed.
Ardamil further said the damage to livestock and poultry affects food security because they are meat and dairy milk sources./PN
