SAN JOSE, Antique – Antique is commemorating the 31st death anniversary of local hero Evelio B. Javier today with music and speeches.

A mass will be held 6 a.m. at the Mensa Domini Chapel. A wreath-laying and candle-lighting at Javier’s tomb at the San Jose Catholic Cemetery will follow.

The provincial government will hold a program, “Pebrero Onse, The Hero’s Trail: Remembering the Last Moments of EBJ.”

It starts at 3 p.m. at the EBJ Freedom Park. There will be a gathering at the site where Javier was shot, while Santhea Jane Atienza will lead the singing of a prayer at the capitol lobby.

Gov. Rhodora Cadiao will give a speech, while Engr. Bernie Salcedo will deliver “Hinun-anon kang Katawhan sa mga Inagihan Kaimaw sa Baganihan.”

Halad kay Beloy” songs and “Antique, Rugya Kami” will be sang along with a candle-lighting.

Republic Act 7601, signed on June 3, 1992 by then president Corazon Aquino, declared Feb. 11 a special nonworking holiday in Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Iloilo.

The declaration was to commemorate the death anniversary of the late governor, also considered a modern-day hero.

“[Javier] dared speak against oppression when many kept their silence for fear of retaliation,” said his nephew, Rep. Paolo Everardo S. Javier. “He inspired many and awakened slumbering souls, igniting the biggest fight for democracy that the world has witnessed: the EDSA People Power Revolution.”

Javier’s death was being remembered to keep his spirit alive and honor the essence of his life and martyrdom, the congressman said.

EBJ was gunned down by masked gunmen on Feb. 11, 1986, at the height of the snap presidential election, in front of the capitol where election returns were being canvassed.

The killers were allegedly linked to allies of then president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Javier was a staunch supporter of Marcos’ opponent Corazon Aquino. (PIA/PN)
