ILOILO City – With the theme “Converges Youth Power, Builds Sustainable Future”, the 2017 Palarong Pambansa is set to host some 10,000 student-athletes and sports officials from the country’s 18 regions when festivities commence from April 23 to 29 in the province of Antique.
The annual Palaro will witness the Philippines’ “cream of the crop” meet, compete and showcase athleticism while developing the spirit of sportsmanship, discipline and camaraderie.
Antique governor Rhodora “Dodod” Cadiao said the province is putting its best foot forward in hosting the national games for the first time, and will underline youth empowerment.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and the province of Antique had earlier held a ceremonial signing of the memorandum of agreement for the fast-approaching Palaro, on March 16 at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City. The ceremony was led by Education secretary Leonor Briones and Cadiao.
This year’s Palaro will introduce two demo sports and one demo event: pencak silat, dancesports and aerobic gymnastics, respectively. It will also feature the sports development programs of the President Rodrigo Duterte administration to counter drugs and crimes.
Formerly the Bureau of Public Schools-Interscholastic Athletics Association Games, or BPISAA, the national event was first held in in Manila in 1948. Under the Republic Act No. 10588, the Palaro is recognized as the country’s “premier national sporting event” highlighting “self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry”.
Among the young athletes excited for the competition to kick off is 12-year-old swimming sensation Kyla Ong Soguilon of the Kalibo Sun Yat Sen School.
Already a decorated international competitor at such a tender age, Soguilon has accomplished the rare feat of winning the Philippine Sportwriters Association’s Junior Athlete of the Year Award thrice in a row – on top of bagging the coveted Milo Junior Athlete of the Year plum.
During the 2016 Palarong Pambansa, she won four gold and two silver medals. She was then awarded the Most Outstanding Swimmer and Most Bemedalled Athlete of the meet. Soguilon hopes to accomplish a repeat sweep this year in Antique./PN
