SAN JOSE, Antique – A 22-year-old Antiqueño died while undergoing police training at the PNP Regional Training Center (RTC) 6 in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
Police Officer 1 Frenz Galen Frades, a resident of Barangay 8 in this capital town, was brought to The Doctors Hospital in Bacolod after he collapsed around 7 p.m. on Tuesday while performing physical exercises, said RTC-6 director Superintendent Jimmy Laguyo.
Frades was later transferred to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital where he expired around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Laguyo added.
Initial medical findings showed that Frades suffered from heat stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Some reports said he died of aneurysm.
But Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) director Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao in a statement released yesterday said that Frades’ cause of death was hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
HIE, a type of brain injury, is the lack of oxygen in the brain. It is also called asphyxia.
According to Bulalacao, Frades passed the required medical test prior to the training.
But the PRO-6 chief said an investigation will be conducted to gather the “complete facts” of the incident.
“We are extending our sincerest sympathy to the family of PO1 Frades and we are assuring them that all benefits and claims due his heirs will be processed and be given the soonest time possible,” added Bulalacao.
Frades graduated Bachelor of Science in Criminology and took his advanced Reserve Officers’ Training Corps training at St. Anthony’s College in San Jose last year./PN
