Antique’s blood supply adequate amid dengue woes, says Red Cross

SAN JOSE, Antique – The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Antique Chapter assured on Wednesday there is enough supply of blood for dengue and other patients needing transfusion.

In an interview, Emmanuel Ecraela, PRC Antique Chapter Blood Service representative, attributed the sufficient supply to the various bloodletting activities in the province.

“We have enough whole blood supply for the patients,” he said.

Based on their inventory, they currently have 50 units or bags of Type A, 29 units of Type B, 64 units of Type O, and 16 units of Type AB.

“Most dengue patients, however, request from the hospitals or at the PRC Regional Blood Center where there’s a supply of fresh frozen plasma and platelet,” Ecraela added.

He also said that indigent patients referred by the Antique provincial government no longer have to pay for blood processing.

“Gov. Rhodora Cadiao has put an allocation for the indigent patients so that the PRC Antique Chapter could provide a free processing fee for a unit of blood being needed,” Ecraela noted.

He said the processing fee for a unit of blood costs P1,800.

The processing fee is being spent for the testing of the blood to make sure that it is safe and it is the type needed by the patient.

Meanwhile, Ecraela said last July 16, a total of 24 donors responded to the bloodletting activity of the Antique Provincial Police Office as part of the observance of the Police-Community Relations Month.

“We were then able to collect 24 units of blood,” he said.
On Thursday, there will also be bloodletting activity in Barangay Bahoyan, Barbaza initiated by the local government unit. (With a report from PNA/PN)
