MANILA – A mandatory random drug testing in public schools will determine the prevalence of drug use among Filipino students, stressed Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV.
But Aquino warned that the results must not be used to shame students who would test positive.
He sought an investigation on the status of drug education and prevention programs in schools and alternative learning systems.
“Kung may nag-positive, hindi puwedeng gamitin iyan (result) para pahiyain ang isang bata o paalisin sa eskwelahan,” said Aquino. “There must be a lot of confidentiality involved.”
Students who will test positive must be subjected to rehabilitation and peer counseling, said the chairman of the committee on education.
“Hindi naman puwedeng kapag nalaman mong positibo, wala kang gagawin, but at the same time, iyong gagawin mo kailangan akma doon sa bata,” said Aquino.
He added: “Hindi dapat ibalandra sa ekswelahan o i-kick out. Kailangan siyang tulungan para makalampas sa kaniyang problema.”/PN
