MANILA – In a bid to title retention, Arellano University Lady Chiefs began their campaign with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-20 sweep over Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates in NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Regine Arocha
finished with 18 points, nine excellent receptions and eight excellent digs,
while Carla Donato contributed 12 markers for the three time defending
champions.
Amidst their good game, they were however far
from their championship- caliber form as they were held by the Pirates with the
score tied at 25 –all, if not of Arocha and Donato’s consecutive hits after
that sealed them the first set.
A close first set encounter served as the Lady
Chiefs’ wakeup call to dictate the tempo and create crucial separation midway
through the second and third sets to etch their first win of the season.
“Nagulat ako kasi sa practice di ganun inensayo
namin. First game jitters nga buti nga na overcome ng mga bata yung pressure,”
Lady Chiefs head coach Obet Javier said.
Alexandra Rafael finished with 12 points before
leaving late in the match due to an injury, while Bacolodnon Joan Doguna and
Joy Onofre added nine markers each for the Lady Pirates.
In the other match, College of St. Benilde Lady
Blazers cruised to a 25-17, 14-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory over the University of
Perpetual Help Lady Altas./PN
