MANILA – The Arellano University Chiefs Squad bounced back from a poor performance last year to claim the NCAA Season 92 cheerleading title on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Chiefs Squad executed their stunts, tosses and routines to near perfection to draw an impressive score of 218 points and bag its second NCAA title and at the same time stunning defending champions Perpetual Help Perps Squad.
“We did something that we’ve never done before and we executed it well, execution was really key,” said Chiefs Squad head coach Lucky San Juan, who also steered the school to a NCAA cheerleading title two years ago.
“The team worked and prepared hard this year and they deserve it,” said Arellano’s board representative Peter Cayco.
The Chiefs Squad, the second most titled team in the NCAA cheerleading, made up for last year’s ill-fated campaign where it lost to the Perps Squad by just two points, 193-195.
The Perps Squad actually had a more difficult routine this year but just couldn’t pull it off and settled for second with 199.5 points, denying them their 10th title in the last 12 seasons.
“I feel if we had a perfect run, I have a strong feeling we’ll win it, but we couldn’t,” said Perps Squad mentor Ruff Rosario. “I congratulate Arellano, they were the hungrier team and they really executed well.”
Mapua, the inaugural champion in 2004, finished third with 191 points while San Beda and Emilio Aguinaldo wound up fourth and fifth place with 191 and 175 points, respectively./PN
