A PUPIL of Sto. Domingo Elementary School in Arevalo, Iloilo City won a regional government-organized on-the-spot poster-making competition.
Ashley Fuentebella bested 14 other contestants from different schools. She took home a P3,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate of recognition.
Her work will be Western Visayas’ official entry in the national level of the competition this coming Oct. 15.
Organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA) in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), the annual contest is in line with the World Food Day on Oct. 16.
The observance commemorates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.
This year’s contest revolves around the World Food Day theme “Climate is Changing. Food and Agriculture Must, Too.”
The regional level was held on Oct. 5 at CityMall Parola.
According to Engr. Remelyn Recoter, DA regional executive director, the activity gave the young participants an avenue to learn more about the impact of climate change on agriculture and food.
With the average age of Filipino farmers today at 70 years old, there is a need for more people to help in the production of food for the Philippines’ increasing population, the Agriculture department official said.
The regional contest was open to all Grade 4 to 6 pupils enrolled in any public and DepEd-accredited private elementary schools.
All entries were judged based on originality (20 percent), visual impact (20 percent), creative use of agriculture and fishery products (30 percent), and relevance to the theme (30 percent).
The other participants were Janiel Margyani J. Yorac of Iloilo Central Elementary School; Ashley Rose Francisco of Jaro I Elementary School; Marah Grace Aguirre of Baluarte Elementary School; Maegan Rexzel Panligan, Ezekiel Somido and Gleah Anne Macuro of Doane Brilliant Child Learning Heaven Center;
Alyssa Angel Otero and Andrea Kate Famador of Sto. Domingo Elementary School; Louise Belen and Kyla Danica Vargas of Oton Central Elementary School; Lean Kher Legan, Glouanni Paulo Mondejar and Vince Jayson Oños of Cabatuan Parochial School; and Janna Kharyl Tequil of Ticud Elementary School.
The judges were Jude Thaddeus Iledan, DepEd-Division of Iloilo chief field technical assistant; Vic Nabor, DA Region 6 executive assistant; and Juvy Gaton, chief of DA Region 6 information section./PN
