BACOLOD City – Around 200 residents of Barangay Oringao in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental fled their homes after hearing bursts of gunfire on Friday night. Dec. 2.
Based on information released by local authorities in the said village, sub-villages Mansawin, Pitgong and Nabalikan were evacuated at around 5 p.m.
Affected residents temporarily spent the night at the barangay’s covered court. The city government provided them with food.
The residents returned home after an “all clear” was issued.
The Kabankalan City Police Station and the Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion said no encounter took place in the area, but they have launched an investigation.
Last week, an encounter took place in the neighboring village of Camansi between government forces and the New People’s Army, which resulted in the death of a high-ranking rebel leader and a companion./PN
