MANILA – After much delay, World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has finally agreed to defend his crown against Australian Jeff Horn on July 1 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
Top Rank Promotions head Bob Arum made the confirmation to the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday morning but is still waiting for the deal’s remaining points to become finalized.
“We’re slowly finishing up the deal of the fight, people have agreed on essential points,” Arum said. “Paperwork takes time, particularly when it’s not the usual thing of getting it done in the United States.”
“We’re dealing with an Australian promoter, the state government. Here, in this case, you’ve got to cross the T’s and dot the I’s and that’s what we’re in the process of doing,” he added.
Pacquiao has decided to turn to Horn after Arum on Thursday last week gave an ultimatum to the Filipino ring icon: decide now or his boxing comeback will be pushed further to November.
Arum added that Pacquiao should decide immediately whether he wants to fight in July since promoters in Australia have already readied their finances to make the bout happen.
Arum had originally pitted Horn to face Pacquiao but the PacMan instead announced that he would face Amir Khan in Dubai. However, negotiations with United Arab Emirates promoters have largely stalled.
The 28-year-old Horn, who currently holds the WBO and IBF inter-continental welterweight championship, has an unblemished 16-0-1 win-loss-draw ring record, including 11 stoppage victories.
The 38-year-old Pacquiao, on the other hand, has a 59-6-2 win-loss-draw ring record including 38 stoppage wins after his unanimous decision win over Jessie Vargas in November 2015./PN
