MANILA – Team Philippines had another fruitful day to remain at fifth place in the 9th ASEAN Para Games after winning five gold medals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Cielo Honasan captured her third gold medal by ruling the 400m gold for T44 and T45 combined with a time of 63.35 seconds, to add to her mints in the 100m and 200m the previous days.
Honasan, 15, bested Thailand’s Gagun Pagjiraporn who started out strong but fizzled in the end to settle for the silver in 66.41.
Cambodian Vet Chanta took the bronze in 76.43 seconds.
“I just couldn’t control my emotions, that’s why I cried,” said polio victim Honasan, who is set to receive P150,000 for each gold medal she won as an incentive mandated by law.
Veteran powerlifter Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta, for her part, continued to exert her dominance in the powerlifting competition. She captured the over 86kg gold with a lift of 116kg.
“I just want the gold, nothing else,” said the 43-year-old Dumapong-Ancheta, who could have broken her record of 118kg but opted not to attempt anymore in the final round as the gold medal is already in the bag.
The other three gold medals were provided by three-wheeled sprinter Prudencia Panaligan, wheelchair-bound thrower Cendy Asusano and blind thrower Rosalie Terrefiel.
Taking home silver were tracksters Arthus Bucay (C5) and Godfrey Taberna (C4), while the bronze medalists were Marites Burce in discus throw, Jesebel Tordecilla in javelin throw and Roland Sabido in the 100m backstroke for S9 and Gary Bejino in the 100m back for S7.
As of Thursday, Team Philippines is still in fifth place with 16th golds overall on top of 17 silvers and 18 bronzes behind virtual champion Indonesia (90-51-36) and second placer Malaysia (68-63-51)./PN
