WOODPUSHER Ellan Asuela claimed the overall championship in the Hala Bira Iloilo Open Chess Tourney held over the weekend at the GT Town Center-Pavia in Pavia, Iloilo.
Asuela, a Bacolod City native, stood out among 100 chess players from all over the region to take home the top prize in the one-day chess tournament worth P4,000.
Finishing behind Asuela were Iloilo City’s Carlito Lavega (P3,000), Zarraga, Iloilo’s Horizon Villanueva (P2,000), and Michael Silvederio from Oton, Iloilo (P1,000).
Meanwhile, receiving special citation were Nemesio Orlina III of Iloilo City (Top Senior), Nielstin Gallenero from San Miguel, Iloilo (Top Elementary Student) and Jovelyn Sepanton from Lemery Iloilo (Top Female). All of them received P500 each.
The chess event was held in cooperation with the Pavia Chessers Club, Cabatuan Chess Club, Leon Chess Club and Jay Hinolan Chess Club and sponsors Daniel Clar, Mr. and Mrs. Joebie Ape, Jose Piff Caumban, Gerd Endrijautzki, Davies Paint, and GT Town Center./PN
