MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles kept its playoffs hopes alive in the Premier V-League Collegiate Conference after a 25-11, 25-13, 25-13 sweep of San Sebastian College Lady Stags.
Julia Samonte led the way with 12 points while Bea De Leon and Kat Tolentino added 9 markers apiece for Lady Eagles to tie with Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws (3-1) after the Sunday night match at the San Juan Arena.
But Ateneo still needs to win its final elimination round game against the undefeated National University Lady Bulldogs on Saturday to secure its spot in the Final Four.
Nikka Dalisay finished with 8 points while Dangie Encarnacion and Joyce Sta. Rita had 7 and 6 points, respectively, for San Sebastian (1-3), which has bowed out of the contention.
“It was very good teamwork against San Sebastian,” said De Leon.
“I think we were very carefree on the court, that was a big factor for us,” she added. “NU is a tough team, and we are rebuilding, so no pressure on us.”
Ateneo jumped to an early 8-4 lead on hits by De Leon and Tolentino. Errors by Lady Stags followed by conversions from Jhoanna Maraguinot and Samonte increased Lady Eagles’ lead 19-11 to easily bag the set.
It was the same tempo for Lady Eagles in the second set, with Tolentino and De Leon scoring for an 11-5 start. San Sebastian tried to keep close but Lady Eagles pulled away 16-9 for a 2-0 set edge.
Lady Eagles sustained the momentum, with conversions from Samonte and Tolentino pushing the team 14-6 in the third frame. Lady Stags failed to recover, allowing Ateneo to finish the match in straight sets./PN
