MANILA – Ateneo Blue Eagles made a quick work of University of the East Red Warriors 97-73 to stay undefeated in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball on Saturday at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Ilonggo Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds, Jolo Mendoza added 13 markers, while Rafael Verano and Vince Tolentino had 12 points each for Blue Eagles.

The victory catapulted Ateneo to solo first place (11-0), moving the team three wins closer to gaining an outright seat in the best-of-three championship series.

Blue Eagles surged to an early 14-8 start on hits by Ravena and Anton Asistio. UE countered with a rally to snatch a 15-14 edge before Ateneo regained its form with 7 straight points for a 21-18 lead.

Ateneo maintained its scoring in the second frame behind Mendoza and Kris Porter for a 32-25 lead, which expanded 48-35 at the half on consecutive baskets from Ravena.

Blue Eagles pulled away further in the second half on outside conversions from Gian Mamuyac, Mendoza and Nieto, and build its largest lead of the match – 91-60 – on an inside basket by Porter.

“We are happy with the Final Four but we are not content,” said Blue Eagles assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga. “We want to stay focused, be humble and keep on working hard. We also want the players’ attitude to be the same.”

Rookie Mark Maloles finished with 20 points while Mark Olayon added 15 markers for Red Warriors, which bowed out of contention for a Final Four seat after dropping to 3-9./PN
