MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles took the solo lead in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball standings after beating University of the Philippines Maroons 92-71.
Ilonggo Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena led the drubbing with 16 points and six rebounds for Ateneo, which tallied its second consecutive win in as many games.
Rookie Tyler Tio added 14 markers – 10 coming in the final quarter – while Norman Aaron Black and Chibueze Ikeh had 9 points each for the Season 79 runner-up squad.
Blue Eagles opened the Wednesday night match at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum with a 10-4 lead on conversions by Ikeh and Anton Asistio.
Fighting Maroons rallied back to tie the count at 16 before Blue Eagles regained the lead on back-to-back treys by Isaac Go and Jolo Mendoza.
UP managed to keep the match close early in the second quarter 22-20 but Ateneo pulled away on hits by Go and Mike Nieto for a 44-36 halftime edge.
Blue Eagles maintained its hot shooting in the third frame for a 57-43 lead on triples by Black and Ravena. But Fighting Maroons banked on hits by Juani Gomez De Liano to trim the deficit to 51-62.
Ateneo widened the lead for good in the fourth quarter. Tio unloaded 10 straight points to stretch the gap 70-51 before they built their largest lead 80-56 on a triple by Raffy Verano.
“When we get the ball moving, we don’t know where the offense will come from. It can come from different people. That’s one of the reasons it will be harder to defend this team,” said Blue Eagles assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga.
Rookie Gomez De Liano finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Jun Manzo added 14 markers for UP, which slid to 1-1 and tied with Far Eastern University Tamaraws./PN
