Ateneo turns back Adamson in UAAP women’s volley

Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles made short work of Adamson University Lady Falcons, 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

AC Miner paced the Blue Eagles with 13 points on 10 attacks, two service aces, and a block as the Blue Eagles notched their third consecutive win to improve to a 4-5 win-loss slate.

Lyann de Guzman contributed a triple-double of 12 points, 13 excellent digs, and 13 excellent receptions, while Zey Pacia finished with 10 markers for the streaking Blue Eagles.

“For this game everyone contributed, like everyone put the effort and they are focused inside the court. We just fight kahit anong mangyari, just push through every point,” said setter Taks Fujimoto, who tossed 17 excellent sets to go with five points.

The victory served as a bounce back for the Blue Eagles as they bowed to the Lady Falcons during their first round encounter on February 16, 21-25, 20-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-12.

“I think our best skill today was our serves. Our serves did a lot of damage to the opponent. This is important, and in the hard moments, my team continued to focus,s and it’s the best to do for this moment,” said Blue Eagles head coach Sergio Veloso.

Shaina Nitura finished with 21 points from 20 attacks and one block to go with 11 excellent receptions and seven excellent digs as the Lady Falcons fell to a 3-6 win-loss record.

Meanwhile, Negrense Angel Canino overcome dizziness to propel De La Salle University Lady Spikers to a 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 16-14 victory over University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.

Canino, who was accidentally hit in the neck after a collision with teammate Shevana Laput in the fourth set, finished with a season-high of 27 points, 13 excellent digs, and 13 excellent receptions for the Lady Spikers.

Laput contributed 16 points, while IIongga Amie Provido and Alleiah Malaluan added 12 and 10 points, respectively, helping the Lady Spikers rise to second place with a 6-3 win-loss slate./PN
