MANILA – The Ateneo Blue Eagles thwarted an endgame run by the Far EasternUniversity Tamaraws to escape to a 76-71 win in the UAAP Season 79men’s seniors basketball tournament on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena inPasay City.
With the score tied at 76-all, the Eagles banked on clutch hits byFerdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III and Anton Asistio for a 74-69 lead. Freethrows by Asistio and Ravena sealed the win for the Eagles.
IlonggoRavena led the way with 17 points, while Adrian Wong androokie Jose Mendoza chipped in 13 and 10 points respectivelyfor the Eagles, which improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate.
From a tight start, the Blue Eagles pulled away behind Ravena andMendoza for a 23-10 lead. The Tamaraws rallied back behind WendellComboy to come to within 27-24, but Mendoza and Ravena conspired inanother run for a 37-25 halftime lead.
The Eagles continued its run in the third frame to maintain a 61-49lead on back-to-back triples by Wong. But the Tamaraws came up with ahuge surge behind Comboy, Joseph Nunag and Richard Escoto to tie thecount at 66-all.
Comboy finished with his career-best 20 points, including four triples,while Raymar Jose and Prince Orizu added 16 markers apiece for theTamaraws, which slid down to a 1-2 record.
In women’s action, two-time defending champion National UniversityLady Bulldogs clinched its third win this season, 35th consecutiveoverall dating back to 2014, following a 85-53 win over the AdamsonUniversity Lady Falcons.
Gemma Miranda and reigning MVP Afril Bernardino teamed up for 46points for the Lady Bulldogs, which is still favored to win thewomen’s basketball championship with its solid lineup./PN
