ILOILO City – Though difficult, he would never let fear prevent him from “fighting the battles that must be fought,” according to Ilonggo human rights lawyer Angelo Karlo Guillen.
From his hospital bed Guillen, who was attacked by four still unidentified men last week, declared: “The cause of human rights is certainly one worth fighting for.”
Evening of March 3 on General Luna Street, Guillen was assaulted by four men. They struck him with a 12-inch screwdriver on the head and shoulder before running off with his bag.
“Physically, the attack weakened me. But my resolve to continue with my NUPL (National Union of People’s Lawyers) work has never been stronger,” according to Guillen .
Guillen is one of the counsels in the petitions questioning the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 before the Supreme Court, and the assistant vice president for Visayas of the NUPL.
The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) still faces a blank wall on the identity of the four men.
“We are trying our best to solve this case. This is our priority right now,” ICPO director Police Colonel Uldarico Garbanzos told Panay News. “We appeal to the public. If they have any information regarding this case, they can come to our office.”
Concerned citizens took Guillen to the St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo after finding him on the street bleeding.
Policemen suspected robbery was the motive in the attack but cause-oriented groups believed it was something more sinister./PN
