Australia approves coal project

Environmental campaigners fear the approval could pave the way for six other mines to be approved in the area. EPA

AUSTRALIA – This country gave the final approval for the construction of a controversial coal mine to be built by Indian company Adani.

The mine, in Queensland’s Galilee Basin, was the subject of years of hold-ups over environmental approvals.

But it was approved by the state government on Thursday, after earlier receiving federal approval.

Adani promised the mine would be one of the biggest in the world creating 10,000 jobs.

Environmental campaigners feared the approval could pave the way for six other mines to be approved in the area. (BBC)
