MANILA – Philippine Azkals suffered a stinging 0-3 defeat to the home team in the Chinese Taipei Football Association International Tournament at the Taipei Municipal Stadium in Taiwan.

Holding on to 1-1 with 3 points, Azkals must defeat Timor-Leste in its final assignment tonight to have a shot at the championship.

Both teams had decent chances in the first half on Sunday before Chinese Taipei surged to 1-0 on a conversion by Li Maotou from top of the key from a pass by Wen Zhihao.

Azkals tried to score an equalizer early in the second half but was unable to penetrate the Chinese Taipei defense. The host squad later raised the lead to 2-0 with Li draining his second goal from a pass by Jia Huang.

Chinese Taipei continued to pound on the listless defense by Azkals as it converted its third goal with Zhong Hua smashing a corner kick from Chen Ting-Yang.

Problems compounded on the Azkals’ side late in the second half when Angel Guirado was given a straight red card due to his physical play with Chen Yiwei.

In the first game, Laos recovered from its 1-3 defeat to Azkals on Friday with a 2-1 domination of Timor-Leste on two first-half goals by Natphasouk Soukchinda./PN
