MANILA – Santa Clarita International High School Primes claimed the 2017 Bingawan Foundation Cup – Regional High School Basketball title after a 104-101 overtime win over CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights.
Sunday night’s championship victory at the Bingawan, Iloilo gym was Santa Clarita’s second less than a month after ruling the 2017 Mayor’s Cup (Iloilo City).
Tournament and finals MVP Giann Paul Nahine led the way with 25 points, while Steve Franc Tono added 24 markers for Primes.
Primes struggled against Silver Knights, trailing 48-56 at the half and 65-79 after three quarters before going on a huge scoring run in the final quarter to take the lead.
Santa Clarita was ahead by 3 with 10 seconds remaining in the regulation, but CenterPhil forced overtime after a buzzer-beating trey from Lester Vain Paraico.
Both teams were into tight contest in the extension period before Primes forced Silver Knights to four consecutive turnovers that led to a 3-point lead by the former on conversions by Tono and Ralph Bajon.
“Give credit to my players. They showed their heart and determination to win this championship,” said Santa Clarita head coach Rodel Camacho. “CenterPhil was a very tough team and they gave a really good fight.”
“At one point I think we were about to lose since we’re down by as much as 14 points but these boys rallied us point by point until we were able to take the lead. It was really a groundout game,” Camacho added.
Patrick John Gain finished with 33 points, while Charles Daniel Sindol added 17 markers for CenterPhil, which faced Santa Clarita in a championship game for the fifth time over the last two years.
Meanwhile University of San Agustin Golden Eagles salvaged a third-place finish following a 71-59 win over St. Roberts International Panda Rockets. Jesmar Fulgencio finished with 16 points for San Agustin./PN
