
BACOLOD City – The City Council enjoined all 61 barangays here to actively participate and celebrate Nutrition Month this July as well as practice healthy lifestyle.
“All barangays are respectfully enjoined to celebrate, promote, and provide awareness to the general public of the importance of balanced diet, healthy lifestyle, and health consciousness,” said Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella, the chairman of the Council’s committee on health.
The public, he added, is likewise encouraged to support the Nutrition Month activities and the partner stakeholders to continuously engage and enhance their respective current plans of action for nutrition.
Pursuant to Presidential Decree 491 of 1974, or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines, July was declared as Nutrition Month and shall be celebrated every year to raise public awareness about the value of good nutrition.
This year, the Philippines is celebrating its 50th Nutrition Month with the theme, “Sa PPAN, Sama-sama Sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat.”
Presidential Decree 491 of 1974 also created the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to supervise, coordinate and evaluate the implementation of the national nutrition program which shall be implemented by all agencies and instrumentalities of both the government and the private sector concerned with improving the nutrition of our people.
The NNC shall coordinate and integrate policies and programs of all agencies and instrumentalities of the government charged with the prosecution of existing law, policies, rules and regulations concerning nutrition.
The Local Government Code of 1991 (Republic Act 7160), meanwhile, mandates local government units to exercise their powers and discharge their functions as necessary and appropriate for the effective provision of basic services including child welfare and nutrition services./PN
