Bacolod Central Market fire displaces nearly 50 vendors

BACOLOD City – Around 50 vendors were displaced in a 30-minute fire that gutted the Bacolod Central Market on Bonifacio Street ,Barangay 12 here early yesterday morning, December 13.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Bacolod City, they received a fire call at 2:50 a.m.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading at 3:20 a.m., said Fire Supt. Jenny Mae Masip, city fire marshal.

Masip said 18 stalls that were destroyed and 12 others were damaged.

She added that another 12 stalls were affected because of the board up being implemented by the City Engineering Office (CEO).

Damaged was pegged at approximately P4.7 million.

As of this writing, arson investigators were still investigating the cause of the blaze.

Meanwhile, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, Cong. Greg Gasataya and the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) held a dialogue with the affected vendors to determine what immediate help they need.

The city government is also considering the part of Bonifacio Street to be utilized as the temporary business location of the fire victims./PN
