Bacolod city council backs creation of two congressional districts

BACOLOD City – The city council passed a resolution supporting the planned creation of two congressional districts here.

The resolution is one of the requirements of Congress for the approval of House Bill (HB) 297 creating the first and second legislative districts.

Cong. Greg Gasataya authored HB 297. It was filed on July 1.

Councilor Al Victor Espino, on the other hand, authored the resolution. He said the redistricting is proper, legal and feasible, pointing out that Bacolod’s population has increased.

The chairperson of the city council’s committee on laws, Espino believes the redistricting will spur Bacolod’s economic growth.

Based on the 2015 census of population, this city’s population has reached 561,875, making it qualify to have two congressmen.

The proposed 1st District shall be made up of barangays 1 to 31, 33, 41, Alangilan, Banago, Bata, Estefania, Granada, Mandalagan, Monte Vista, Villamonte, and Vista Alegre.

On the other hand, the proposed 2nd District shall be composed of barangays 32, 34 to 40, Alijis, Cabug, Felisa, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay, Singcang, Sum-ag, Taculing, and Tangub.

Also, HB 297 requires the city council to have eight councilors from each of the two districts./PN
