BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod has officially declared the last week of August as “Soroptimist Week” to honor and support women’s contributions to the community.

This annual observance will run from August 25 to 31, following a resolution passed during Wednesday’s city council session.

Soroptimist International of Bacolod, a women’s advocacy group, will spearhead a series of activities throughout the week.

The initiatives include an anti-Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) advocacy campaign, an Adopt-A-Barangay project, livelihood training for women, and enhancements to a Child Development Center they support.

Highlighting the partnership with the local government, the group has been instrumental in establishing Balay Pasilungan — two dedicated buildings serving as a refuge for abused women and girls in the city.

The resolution by the city council calls upon all city departments and agencies to actively promote and engage in activities that support Soroptimist Week. This effort aligns with the Philippine Constitution’s emphasis on the essential role of women in nation-building and ensuring their equality under the law./PN
