BACOLOD City – The city government here is planning to set up a night market to accommodate vendors who will be displaced by the road clearing operations.
City Administrator John Orola said they are looking at the possibility of putting up the night market every weekend, where accredited vendors will be allowed to display their wares from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight.
“We will compliment to those vendors who want to have an extra income and if they will be accommodated by the city, that will be a good opportunity for them,” Orola said.
He added: “We will categorize what products will be placed there; it will be like Greenhills in Manila. There will be imported and local sections.”
Orola also said he will meet with the city market committee to discuss the proposal.
Last week, the city government started issuing notices of demolition against erring vendors.
Over 905 sidewalk stalls encroaching public roads are scheduled to be removed in compliance with President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to reclaim streets being privately used.
The affected vendors are from Burgos Public Market with the total of 197 vendors; Central Public Market, 95 vendors; Libertad Public Market, 245 vendors; and 368 sidewalk vendors.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia said those who displayed products outside the three major markets will be transferred inside including those who are occupying Daniel Ramos, Burgos, Ballesteros, and Amelia-Mercedes streets./PN
