BACOLOD City – Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said the city government will reconsider its decision to put on hold the proposed rehabilitation of the Burgos Public Market in this city.
This comes after a signature campaign for the city government to pursue the market development.
“I heard may petition kag kon makita nga majority sa ila (market vendors) in favor of it, we will reconsider our project sa Burgos Market,” Mayor Benitez said.
For her part, Councilor Celia Flor, the chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) committee on markets and slaughterhouse, said she will also ask the mayor to continue with the planned rehabilitation of the public market.
As of this writing, however, the city councilor has yet to receive the official letter from the petitioners who are in favor of the market development.
Earlier, the city mayor announced that the P525-million Burgos Market rehabilitation project will no longer push through following the opposition of several vendors, particularly those at the wet and vegetable sections.
Mayor Benitez decided to allocate the said budget to the improvement of other major public markets in the city – the Central and Libertad markets.
Last month, the City Engineer’s Office has submitted a proposed design for the Burgos Market. It could accommodate approximately 726 stalls across various sections including dry goods, vegetables, meat, fish, food court, as well as night market stalls./PN
