Bacolod City implements preemptive evacuations

BACOLOD City – In response to the severe weather conditions brought on by Tropical Storm Kristine, the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) ordered a preventive evacuation of four families from Barangay Singcang-Airport on October 23.

Edward Ramirez, chief operation officer of the CDRRMO, confirmed that the evacuation was a precautionary measure to protect families whose homes, constructed from light materials, were at risk of collapsing due to the storm’s strong winds.

The families are currently sheltered in the local barangay hall, Ramirez stated, emphasizing the move as a necessary action to prevent injuries.

Additionally, two residences in Barangay Taculing suffered damage when trees were uprooted and fell on them. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents.

Another tree was uprooted along the road in Paglaum Village, Barangay Mansilingan, although it did not result in any injuries.

The city’s storm response also includes ongoing support for approximately 111 families from Barangay Sum-ag, who have been staying at the Sum-ag Elementary School since Monday. These evacuations were triggered by flooding caused by the typhoon’s heavy rains.

According to Ramirez, residents will not be permitted to return home as the area remains under storm signal No. 1, and persistent rainfall continues to pose a risk. He noted that the homes of many evacuees are in flood-prone areas near creeks and rivers, further justifying the need for continued vigilance and precautionary measures./PN
