Bacolod City slates first-ever rum festival

Bacolod City – The staging of the city’s first-ever rum festival will be on August 17 to 24, according to former councilor Em Ang.

Ang authored an ordinance declaring the third week of August as celebration of the festivity.

“This has been made possible with the passage of the ordinance establishing the Rum Festival which was passed just a few months back after work with the Tanduay and many others involved for the celebration,” she said.

She noted that it is fitting for the city government to institute a festival marking the contribution of rum in the sugar industry of the city and Negros Occidental.

“Bacolod City is dubbed as the country’s sugar capital and it is also home of the world’s largest selling rum,” Ang said.

Rum is a distilled clear alcoholic beverage which is a by-product of molasses production or made directly from sugar cane juice.

“Major plantations here have been the major source of employment of the citizens,” she added.
The Rum Festival opening is slated on August 17 at the Bacolod Government Center.

It will be followed by a culinary contest, mixology competition and an opening of food bazaar.

On August 22, there will also be an opening of Sabor Bisaya 2019 at the SMX Convention.

On the next day, there will be a Street Art-Basketball Court Painting.

The highlight will be on August 24 with activities like Rum-Fun and Street Dance Parade and Competition. “We’re very happy that Tanduay agreed to partner with us in this endeavor and Bacolod will not spending a single centavo for the celebration of the festival,” Ang said./PN
