BACOLOD City – The local government here, in partnership with the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), is selling refined sugar at a lesser price of P70.

The regular market price for a kilo of refined sugar is P112, according to City Cooperative and Livelihood Development Office head Brenda Burdeos.

The SRA initially made available 500 kilos of refined sugar, which sold out within an hour of the launch, Burdeos added.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, during the program launch, said the government must temper food prices to address inflation.

“The city intends to avail 1,000 kilos of sugar weekly on a consignment basis,” read part of Benitez’s letter in February this year to then SRA acting administrator Dave John Thaddeus Alba.

The low-priced sugar is only available at accredited vendors in Libertad, Bugos and Central markets.

The sale is limited to two kilos per household./PN
