Bacolod City steps up ‘leptos’ prevention efforts

BACOLOD City – In response to the rising threat of leptospirosis during the monsoon season, the Bacolod City Council has passed a resolution urging all 61 barangays to collaborate closely with the City Health Office (CHO). The move comes as the CHO reported 10 cases of leptospirosis from July 7 to 13, 2024, including three fatalities.

Councilor Puentevella highlighted the importance of an intensified information and prevention campaign due to the data provided. He noted that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has announced the onset of the monsoon, which is expected to bring moderate to severe rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding across parts of the Philippines and heightening the risk of leptospirosis infections.

Leptospirosis, as defined by the World Health Organization, is both a zoonotic and environmental disease, transmitted through contact with water contaminated by infected animal urine. The bacteria can reside in animal kidneys for extended periods before being excreted into the environment.

The barangays of Felisa, Alijis, Punta Taytay, Vista Alegre, Mansilingan, Mandalagan, and Pahanocoy have recorded the highest number of cases, with two cases each in Barangay 35. Additionally, six other barangays reported one case each.

According to the CHO, delayed health-seeking behavior and denial of infection are the most common reasons for complications and deaths associated with the disease.

The city’s health authorities continue to urge the public to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms or potential exposure are suspected./PN
