BACOLOD City – Bicycle lanes will soon be put up on several roads in the city.

The Road Board of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has approved a P62-million budget for the implementation of City Ordinance No. 556, series of 2011, or the Bike Lanes Ordinance of Bacolod City.

Rep. Greg Gasataya said the DPWH will meet today to start discussing the ordinance authored by Councilor Em Ang.

Bicycle lanes or bike-friendly zones must be put up on Burgos Street, corner Circumferential Road up to Barangay Alangilan, and the Bacolod-Murcia Road in Barangay Alijis up to the Bacolod City-Murcia, Negros Occidental boundary in Barangay Mansilingan, the ordinance said.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved the ordinance on Sept. 22, 2011.

Bidding for the bike lanes project may start in June, while construction may commence in the third quarter, Gasataya said.

Bicycle lanes/bike-friendly zones will “safeguard bikers from accidents and other road-related incidents,” the ordinance stated.

But “it is not feasible to establish bike lanes and bike-friendly zones in all parts of Bacolod City, especially the congested areas like the downtown area, Libertad area, Burgos area, and Lacson Street, among others,” said the ordinance.

The areas where the bicycle lanes/bike-friendly zones may be put up were based on the recommendation of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office and the Traffic Management Unit of the Bacolod City Police Office, it added./PN
