Bacolod continues drive vs illegal structures

BACOLOD City – Demolition against erring structures encroaching on public roads of this city are ongoing.

Yesterday, over 30 illegal structures were dismantled in Barangay Singcang-Airport.

According to village chief Rosinie Distrito, it has not met resistance from owners of road obstructions after the city government gave them 10-day ultimatum to self-demolish.

“Some of the structures were illegally erected in the road right of way. Some are houses and others were business establishments,” Distrito said.

The crackdown against illegal structures is in compliance with the order of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to clear the roads in 60 days, which was based on President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive during his State of the Nation Address to reclaim public roads being privately used.

Last week, Mayor Evelio Leonardia met with barangay officials during a consultative meeting.

He said the city government is implementing a 10-day notice period.

“We gave them until Friday to deliver the notices to all concerned structure owners,” he said.

The mayor added that after 60 days, substantial compliance is expected among the local government units all over the country.

“DILG secretary Eduardo Año is a very serious leader and President Rodrigo Duterte is a disciplinarian. We expect substantial compliance all over the Philippines,” Leonardia said./PN
