BACOLOD City – Crime volume in this capital city decreased 33 percent in the first 20 days of June, according to the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO).
From June 1 to 20 this year, the BCPO recorded 152 crimes in Bacolod while in the same period last year, 228.
The incidence of the index crimes – murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, rape, car theft, and motorcycle theft – went down 28.07 percent, from 57 cases last year to 41 this year.
Non-index crimes (violations of special laws), on the other hand, dropped 35.09 percent, from 171 last year to 111 this year.
BCPO head Senior Superintendent Francisco Ebreo attributed the decrease to the support that the police force get from city and barangay officials and the heightened awareness campaign on crime prevention.
“We conduct information dissemination, hold dialogues and seminars, and distribute IEC (information, education and communication) materials,” Ebreo said.
Through these, the people are made aware of various modus operandi of criminals, thus preventing them to fall as victims, according to Ebreo.
City and barangay officials are very supportive of the awareness campaign, he added.
BCPO records also showed that there was a 57.14 percent increase in the number of police-initiated operations from June 1 to 20 this year.
The records also showed that crime incidence in Bacolod has downward trend since January.
In May, crime volume in the city dropped 26.85 percent while in April, 20.98 percent, in March, 34.65 percent, and in February, 27.3 percent.
From 99 incidents last year, the number went down to 55 in January this year. (With a report from PNA/PN)
