BACOLOD City – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 6 conducted a “surprise” drug test on public utility vehicle drivers in the city.
The 75 drivers who took the test yielded negative results, PDEA said.
They include 24 jeepney drivers, 20 taxi drivers, 19 tricycle drivers, and 12 utility van drivers.
Friday’s drug tests were conducted in three areas – the Ceres Liner Northbound Terminal in Barangay Bata, the Southbound Terminal in Barangay 31, and the DAALCO Waiting Station at Libertad South Public Market in Barangay 40.
The conduct of the drug tests was part of the nationwide “Oplan Harabas: Drug Test Muna Bago Pasada” organized to arrest drivers who use or possess illegal drugs.
The campaign also aims to ensure the safety of the riding public, said PDEA regional director Alex Tablate.
“The driver who refuses to undergo the mandatory drug test will be reported and immediately endorsed to the Land Transportation Office,” Tablate said.
PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino said “surprise” drug tests are conducted as part of a holistic approach to monitor drug users.
“The safety of the riding public is our primary concern and this program will serve as our revalidation effort on the alleged illegal drug use by drivers of public transportation,” Aquino said.
This is also to promote a drug-free public transport system all over the country, he added.
The PDEA-6 led the initiative in coordination with the Philippine National Police, Land Transportation Office and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. (With a report from PNA/PN)
