BACOLOD City – The city government might use its old slaughterhouse to discourage the unregulated slaughter of chickens.
Its slaughterhouse in Barangay Handumanan has not yet activated its chicken line.
The operation of AVM Bernardo Slaughterhouse in 2008 led to the abandonment of the old one in Barangay 35.
Using the old slaughterhouse may help city hall in its campaign against the indiscriminate slaughter of chickens, according to Councilor Bartolome Orola, a member of Task Force Botagoy.
Task Force Botagoy was charged with catching illegal slaughterers and confiscating “hot” or “double-dead” meat and any vehicle or paraphernalia involved. It operates under the City Veterinary Office.
During the task force’s meeting on Wednesday Orola said they have learned there was “massive illegal slaughter” of chickens here.
He said his brother John, the city administrator, suggested “[utilizing] the old slaughterhouse” in Barangay 35.
Marvin Tañada, counsel for AVM Bernardo, said all poultry raisers will have to be required to have their chicken slaughtered at the new slaughterhouse for them to activate their chicken line.
A resolution from the Sangguniang Panlungsod is needed for that, stressed the lawyer.
Councilor Orola, committee on markets and slaughterhouse chairman, said he will bring up this matter to his fellow councilors soon.
Orola said he learned that the Lizares family donated the old slaughterhouse property to the city government.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia recently reconstituted Task Force Botagoy via Executive Order No. 20.
Now headed by Rex Juplo, the task force has the following members: Councilor Orola; Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets; Bacolod City Police Office director Senior Superintendent Flynn Dongbo; city hall Public Information Officer Danny Dangcalan, and National Meat Inspection Service and City Legal Office representatives.
Earlier Juplo said they will inspect the major markets in Libertad, Central and Burgos, malls, and barangay markets, in light of reports that meats of illegally slaughtered hogs and large animals were being sold there./PN
