BACOLOD City — Leptospirosis cases in this city last year were 80 percent higher than those recorded in 2021, data from the City Health Office (CHO) showed.
From January to December 2022, there were 45 suspected cases, including 11 deaths, while in the entire 2021, there were only 25 cases, of which six deaths were reported.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease. One becomes infected through direct contact with the urine of infected animals or with a urine-contaminated environment.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, said 60 percent of those who contracted the disease and also those who died had a history of wading in contaminated water while more than 60 percent delayed seeking medical help.
The highest number of cases was reported in Barangay Singcang-Airport with seven, followed by Barangay Taculing with five, while the age group with the most number of cases was 21 to 30.
Leptospirosis bacteria enter the body through cuts or abrasions on the skin or through the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes.
“If you cannot avoid wading in flood water, use boots. You can go to the health center for
information and for advisory if there is a need for you to take prophylaxis,” said Tan. (PNA)/PN
