BACOLOD City – The Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) has recorded 270 traffic incidents involving a total of 276 vehicles from January 1 to September 5 this year.

These incidents of reckless imprudence resulted to property damage (179 incidents), physical injury (75), and homicide (16), BCPO data showed.

Of the 276 vehicles involved, 95 were motorcycles, 89 were cars, and the rest were trucks (31), jeepneys (27), public utility jeepneys (19), tricycles (10), e-bikes (four), and bicycle (one).

The BCPO yesterday said that the significant number of physical injuries and fatalities underscores the need for enhanced road safety measures and public vigilance.

Following this, the city police committed increased patrols and stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to enhance road safety and reduce traffic incidents.

The BCPO however stressed that public cooperation is essential to creating a safer driving environment for everyone. It urged residents and drivers to take proactive steps to avoid becoming victims of traffic incidents.

The BCPO’s Public Information Office, meanwhile, reminded the public of the following safety tips to avoid traffic accidents:

* Always follow traffic laws and regulations and obey speed limits and traffic signals.

* Refrain from using mobile phones or engaging in other distractions while driving.

* Practice defensive driving by staying alert and anticipate the actions of other drivers.

* Ensure that your vehicle is in good working condition to avoid malfunctions that could lead to accidents.

* Wear seatbelts.

For its part, the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office through its deputy officer-in-charge, Jose Antonio Robello, said one of the most common factors that contribute to traffic accidents are distracted driving and overspeeding./PN
