BACOLOD City – Officials and representatives of various sectors joined the commemoration of the 155th birth anniversary of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio during rites at the Bonifacio Park on Aguinaldo Street.
Councilor Bartolome Orola, who spoke on behalf of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, urged Bacolodnons on Friday to remember those who fought for freedom, especially from Spanish colonizers.
A wreath was laid at the Bonifacio monument while pupils of the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School presented a tableau on the life of the hero.
Teachers, police officers, barangay officials, and civic group members were present at the program.
In the afternoon members of militant organizations including Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Negros and allied groups, as well as the Partido ng Manggagawa held separate rallies.
Bayan-Negros again called for justice for the victims in the “Sagay 9” massacre in Sagay City, Negros Occidental and the killing of Atty. Benjamin Ramos Jr. in Kabankalan City.
Bonifacio Day was being held every year in honor of the founder and the supremo (supreme leader) of the Katipunan. It became a holiday by virtue of Act No. 2946 in 1921.
It was one of the regular holidays under Proclamation No. 555 series of 2018 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte. (PNA)
