BACOLOD Tay Tung High School made a quick work of Negros Occidental – St. John’s Institute 25-10, 25-18 in the tension-filled girls’ volleyball match in the 2018 Batang Pinoy National Finals on Thursday at the University of Cordilleras in Baguio City.
Shane Carmona and Alyssa Bertolano took turns on the offensive end for Tay Tung, which clinched the No. 1 seed heading into the semifinals with an unblemished 5-0 win-loss slate.
From a tight exchange early in the opening set, Tay Tung suddenly went on a huge run with Carmona and Bertolano pounding on the loopholes in the Negrenses defense for a quick 15-point edge and never looked back.
The Negros squad tried to keep it close early in the second canto and even tasted a lead once but Tay Tung came up with a finishing run from Carmona and Kiesha Bedonia for a two-set sweep.
Tay Tung assistant coach Biboy Calamba said the players were determined to beat their Western Visayan neighbors after being heckled and badmouthed by members of the Negros Occidental team on Wednesday.
“The girls were extra motivated to win in dominant fashion because they heard naman iyong mga pinagsisisigaw noong parent ng isang player from the Negros Occidental team,” Calamba told Panay News.
Negros Occidental currently has a 3-1 card and can rise to No. 2 depending on the outcome of its final match late Thursday. The semifinals and finals were scheduled today./PN
