MANILA – Runner Bernalyn Bejoy added a bronze to the medal haul of Team Philippines in the 2018 ASEAN School Games at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Bacolod City native made sure she will not go home empty-handed with a strong performance in 800m dash on Monday.
A product of Romanito Maravilla National High School, Bejoy finished the race in 2 minutes and 17.51 seconds behind Vietnam’s Ngo Thinh Khanh Ny (2:13.90) and Filipina Tara Borlain (2:15.54).
Bejoy failed to snag a medal in 400m hurdles on Sunday.
As of this writing the Philippines was still on fifth place in the medal tally with five gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals behind Malaysia (22-23-14), Indonesia (15-16-20), Thailand (12-16-16), and Vietnam (7-2-6).
Another Bacolodnon, Althea Descutido, captured a bronze Monday after finishing fourth in rhythmic gymnastics, while the pair of Yllana Tan and Mia Manguilimotan also won bronze in badminton.
Negrense Gwyneth Amber Cawaling and Ilonggo Moses Oliver Bito-onon failed to qualify to the medal rounds in their respective swimming events.
Negrense Vince Jayson Buhayan and Filipino teammate Veruel Verdadero qualified to the championship of boys 200m after finishing fourth and third in their respective heats in the qualifiers.
The Philippines captured its lone gold medal that day courtesy of Jessel Lumapas and Deserie Niala who made a 1-2 finish in girls 200m dash. Lumapas clocked in 25.03 seconds while Niala had 25.07 ticks.
Winning silver were Justin Ace de Leon in artistic gymnastics and Erwin Mancao in boys 1500m, while Neo Laudato and Angelou Laude bagged bronze in mixed table tennis./PN
