BACOLOD City – This city battled back from two sets down to defeat Area 4 in five sets and clinch the secondary boys volleyball crown of the Negros Provincial Meet 2019 over at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Gym here.
The feat was historic for the Bacolod City Golden Titans of head coach Claro Tigallo. It was their first time in a long while to reach and win a championship in the Provincial Meet.
“Today we changed history. Making it to the Top 4 is a great achievement already. But to be a champion is unbelievable,” Tigallo said. “I did not expect this kind of achievement although my boys kept on saying we will go to the regionals.”
It was not a great start for the Golden Titans. They fell down two sets to none before making strong starts in the third and fourth frames to force a deciding fifth set.
Bacolodnons went on with its momentum in the fifth frame with a commanding 8-4 lead before Area 4 mounted a huge fight back. They trimmed the deficit to 11-9, but a 4-1 finishing kick by the Bacolodnons sealed the championship.
En route the finals, Bacolod City defeated Area 5 (Himamaylan City), followed by dethroning Area 8 (NOPSSCEA) then MACASA (Cadiz City). However, they lost to Area 1 (San Carlos City) in the preliminaries for a 3-1.
Suited up for Bacolod City were skipper Paul Longno, Ramos siblings Justine and Jiroh Ken, Tacorda twins Cris Vincent and Cris Bryan, Francis Castillo, Dominador Malinao Jr., Remy Aragon Jr., Kermith Diamante, Terrence Segovia, John Paul Perez, and John Dorimon./PN
