MANILA – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts settled for a runner up finish in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League after a 25-20, 25-5, 25-22 defeat to Adamson University Lady Baby Falcons on Sunday night at the Adamson University Gym.
The Lady Baby Falcons, the reigning UAAP high school girls volleyball champions, showed their dominance from start to finish to capture their first championship in the annual tournament.
Adamson surged to a 7-1 start in the opening set and were later ahead at 24-17. The Thunderbolts responded with three straight points to cut the deficit to 20-24 before they committed an attack error.
The Lady Baby Falcons were scorching in the second set as they opened up a 12-3 advantage. Adamson went on with their avalanche of points to establish a double-digit lead at 25-5 en route to a 2-0 set edge.
The Thunderbolts managed to keep in step with the Lady Baby Falcons in the third set with the score tied at 20-all, but Adamson created a 23-20 separation to secure the championship in straight sets.
Rhose Viane Almendralejo, who was consistent for the Thunderbolts all tournament long, was named 1st Best Outside Hitter, while Rhea May Tomas was adjudged as Best Libero.
Adamson’s Shaina Nitura was named as tournament MVP, while her teammates Samantha Cantada (2nd Best Outside Hitter), Lhouriz Tuddao (1st Best Middle Blocker), Abegail Segui (Best Opposite Hitter), and Felicity Sumagaysay (Best Setter) also received citations.
Ilongga Ma. Robielle Silla of the National University Nazareth School Lady Bullpups, on the other hand, was named as 2nd Best Middle Blocker of the two-week long competition.
Kings’ Montessori School, on the other hand, claimed the bronze medal after a 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Lady Bullpups. Shekaina Lleses was named Player of the Game with 28 points.
Far Eastern University Lady Baby Tamaraws finished fifth with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 win over Arellano University High School, while Bethel Academy edged Lyceum Junior Pirates, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, for seventh place./PN
