SAN CARLOS City – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts U-18 girls volleyball team bagged the women’s division title in the 62nd San Carlos City Charter Day Volleyball Open Tournament on Tuesday at the San Carlos City Sports Park here.

Ysabelle Chua, Alex Montoro and Katherine Shaine Cortez spearheaded the attack for the Thunderbolts as they scored a 25-23, 25-12, 25-16 straight-set victory over Team Dumaguete in the championship game.

The championship in the three-day tournament was a follow-up to the Thunderbolts’ sweep of the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-18 girls categories of the San Carlos City Invitational Age-Group Volleyball Festival last week.

“The players showed tremendous efforts during the three-day tournament,” said Thunderbolts assistant coach Roberto Calamba Jr. “They kept their hunger to win and composure despite playing more than once each day here.”

Also part of the team were Dona Mae De Leon, Rhose Viane Almendralejo, Alijah Ysulan, Amber Lily Biong, Sophie Cagalawan, Patricia Grace Hiponia, Joenil Ramos, Anthiea Nishant Galicia, Jihann Chuatico, Joenil Anne Ramos and Ana Francessca Hermosura.

The Team Dumaguete, which was handled by former Thundebolts assistant coach Charris Neri, was led by former Bacolod Tay Tung High School players Erika Deloria and Shane Carmona.

Others in the Team Dumaguete roster were Valerie Tangeres, Cherry Solitana, Nikki Carbona, Dannah Jimenez, Saidatu Yushawu, Lycille Patrocillo and Shaina Pialante.

The Thunderbolts swept all their matches in the preliminary round to reach the semifinals, where they defeated University of St. La Salle. Team Dumaguete prevailed over University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in the other semis.

UNO-R, however, salvaged a bronze medal finish after defeating USLS-Bacolod in the women’s competition of the tournament that was held as part of San Carlos City’s Charter Day celebration.

Meanwhile, Team Loyal claimed the championship in the men’s volleyball division after defeating Team Dauin in the one-game finale. University of St. La Salle bagged the bronze medal./PN
