BACOLOD City – Following the discovery of medical waste at the Handumanan Public Cemetery, the city government will be creating a centralized recycling facility.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez confirmed that it was not only in Handumanan Public Cemetery that the City Health Office (CHO) is disposing of its medical wastes but also at the North Public Cemetery (Burgos Cemetery).
On Sunday night, March 19, the mayor conducted a spot inspection at the Handumanan public cemetery.
“This has to stop. We will find a permanent solution to medical waste. It should not be there,” he said.
Benitez was told that it has been the practice of the CHO for several years because the city has no appropriate facility.
The mayor said the city will establish a facility adjacent to the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.
Benitez also laid out his plan to upgrade the public cemetery and to standardize its rates.
