Bacolod to intensify drive vs ‘hot meat’

BACOLOD City – The city council is mulling stricter measures to ensure that only meat products fit for human consumption reach consumers.

Councilor Carlos Jose Lopez authored a resolution that enjoins the city’s veterinary and livestock institutions to conduct a joint monitoring of markets and meat retailers.

According to Lopez, he authored the resolution after receiving reports of “hot meat” proliferating in local wet markets.

“Illegal slaughtering of livestock poses great risk to consumers,” he stressed.

The City Veterinary Office, AVM Bernardo Slaughterhouse and Task Force Botagoy will be tasked to undertake the joint operation, according to Lopez.

“It is crucial that the city government put an end to the illegal slaughtering and sale of consequential animal meats,” he stressed.

On July 18, personnel of Task Force Botagoy and National Meat Inspection Service seized 175 kilograms of “hot meat” in Barangay Mandalagan.

Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head on markets, said the confiscated meat was from the stall of Arnold Binabon.

According to Pineda, vendors who refuse to use the services of the slaughterhouse run by the city government will be apprehended.

He also urged the consumers to check the meat inspection certificate before buying the product./PN
